THE SYMBOLIC presentation of permanent appointment letters to members of the civil staff in the Army occurred this morning (23) at Army Headquarters under the auspices of Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Commander of the Army.
A total of 3500 members of the civil staff serving in the sphere of cooking, cleaning and minor-staff duties who hitherto remained as casual labourers and employees in the Army were to accordingly receive permanency in their jobs with pension rights.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya inaugurating the presentation symbolically handed over letters of appointment to 25 of them prior to the onset of the annual New Year celebrations at the Army Headquarters grounds.
Just minutes after the presentation, collective sharing of joy, fun and amusement, associated with the dawn of a New Year that rekindles fresh hopes for prosperity were showcased when Officers and Other Ranks at Army Headquarters jointly held their annual New Year celebration, witnessed by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest.
A concoction of traditional and fun-making New Year associated games, competitions and sport events, such as tugs of war, pillow fights, grease pole climb, hurdle runs, balancing of eggs and lemons, etc added colour and thrill to the forenoon event, graced by a gathering of senior Officers and Soldiers who have shown a keen interest towards this annual event, organized by all units in the Army Headquarters.
The major events followed crowning of the New Year princess, “Avurudu Kumari” from Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps members.
Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch who was also associated with the New Year celebration arrangements crowned the New Year princess, Private T.P.S Damsarani .
A buffet lunch concluded the day’s agenda with the participation of the commander of the Army, Senior Officers and all Ranks.
