Commander Lauds Retiring Major General Lamahewa’s Service to the Army

Major General A.C Lamahewa WWV RWP RSP, Director General Infantry at Directorate of Infantry and Colonel of the Regiment, Gemunu Watch (GW), just days before his retirement from the Army, having served for more than 35 years was invited Friday (24) morning to the office of the Army Chief, together with his family members.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army at the meeting with the retiring Senior Officer recalled noteworthy milestones during the latter’s admirable career as an Infantryman of the Highlanders. He praised him for his dedicated service and performance of diverse responsibilities with unfailing commitment and selflessness.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage similarly refreshed memories of the retiree’s contribution and valuable roles during the height of the war against terrorism as an Infantry Officer of the highest calibre before May 2009.

Major General A.C Lamahewa WWV RWP RSP also thanked the Army Commander for his invitation and expressed his gratitude for the able guidance lent to him all the time in the performance of his office as the Director General Infantry at Directorate of Infantry, and other diverse capacities.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members invited to the occasion also inquired into the retiring Senior Officer’s future endeavours and plans. He also commended the precious support that has been given to the Senior Officer by his family members throughout his career particularly during challenging times while the retiring Senior Officer was engaged in operations elsewhere in the battlefield to safeguard the motherland.

Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a special gift to the family. The Senior Officer also presented a memento as the retiring Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch.

Major General A.C Lamahewa WWV RWP RSP enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on 22 February 1988 and underwent basic military training in the Sri Lanka Military Academy in the Intake 29 before he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Gemunu Watch. He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 28 January 2021.

He has been holding the office of the Director General Infantry at Directorate of Infantry, and Colonel of the Regiment, GW at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Platoon Commander, Intelligence Officer, Adjutant, 5 GW, Officer Commanding B and D Companies, 5 GW, Brigade Major, 233 and 545 Infantry Brigades, Staff Officer 2, Directorate of Welfare, Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 2 (Administration), Army Base Hospital, Panagoda, Second in Command, 5 GW, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations), 59 Infantry Division, Commanding Officer, RHQ Battalion and 7 GW, General Staff Officer 1 (Administration), Security Forces - South, Commander, Contingent of Sri Lanka Force Protection Company (FPC) in United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Colonel (General Staff), 57 Infantry Division, Deputy Centre Commandant, Regimental Centre, GW, Officiating Commander, 561 Infantry Brigade, Commander, 144 Infantry Brigade, Commandant, Combat Training School, Ampara, General Officer Commanding, 24 Infantry Division, and Director General General Staff, Office of the Chief of Defence Staff.

For his bravery and gallantry in the battlefield, he has been awarded the ‘Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya’, ‘Rana Wickrama Padakkama’, and ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’.

During his service period, he has undergone many local and overseas courses, including Junior Command Course and Unit Administration Course, Young Officers’ Course, India, Junior Command Course, India, Senior Command Course, India, United Nations Contingent Commander’s Course, Bangladesh, Command and Staff Operations Law Course, Australia.

Moreover, he has undergone several non-military courses including, Master of Science in Security and Strategic Studies at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Diploma in Senior Level Defence Management at University of Indore, India, Diploma in Psychology at Institute of Psychological Studies, Colombo, and Advanced Certificate in Guidance and Counselling at Institute of Psychological Studies, Colombo.
