Commander Invites Two Spouses of Great War Veterans to His Office

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army this morning (27) invited two spouses of great war veterans, Mrs Lali Kobbekaduwa and Mrs Manel Wimalarathne whose late husbands, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa RWP RSP VSV USP rcds psc and Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc have respectively mustered admiration and immortal respect of the Nation as war veterans of the highest calibre, gallantry and patriotism to his office at the Army Headquarters.

The Commander of the Army, together with Mrs Janaki Liyange, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit extended a warm reception to both ladies on arrival and interacted with them inquiring about their well-being while recalling cherished memories of their beloved husbands.

The Army Chief's own initiative symbolized the high degree of recognition and respect he attaches to the treasured memories of the Gajaba Regiment's founding father, late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne who was the driving force behind the success of the GR as an infantry unit. Today's cordial meet also serves a tribute to the legendary War Hero, late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa whose military leadership remains hitherto unparalleled.

Afterwards, both visiting spouses were invited to the Commander's conference room to distribute several Jukie machines and school stationeries among deserving families of soldiers, selected by the Army Seva Vanitha Unit. At the same occasion, two video documentaries that refreshed the memories of both late war veterans were screened.

Towards the end of the cordial interactions, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, appreciative of their sustained support and inspiration given to their late War Heroes while they were fighting against terrorism awarded two special mementos to them. Afterwards, both spouses were invited to leave compliments in the Visitors’ Book at the Commander's office.

Before their departure, they were hosted to lunch by Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage and Mrs Janaki Liyanage.

Major General S.W.M Fernando WWV RWP RSP USP ndc psc, Military Secretary, Major General G.R.R.P Jayawardena RWP RSP ndu, Quarter Master General and Senior members of the Army Seva Vanitha unit were also associated with the days' event.
