Unparalleled heroism and unforgettable memories of hundreds of fallen War Heroes who liberated the entire Eastern Province from the grip of brutal LTTE terrorism a few years ago are to be immortalized by erecting the Digamadulla ‘Ranaviru Maha Seya’ (Pagoda for War Heroes) at Namalthalawa Sri Shailabimbarama Viharaya premises.

Ven Gampaha Narada Thera, Chief Incumbent, together with the temple’s Dayaka Sabha after taking the decision of this proposed construction, invited Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army to be the Chief Guest on Friday (29) when the auspicious corner-stone of the ‘Ranaviru Maha Seya’ was laid amid a large gathering of devotees, including District Secretaries for Trincomalee and Ampara.

This East-based first ‘Ranaviru Maha Seya’ of 36 ft in height is to be completed within a year to be in line with the recognized ‘Gantakara’ sculpture tradition of Buddhist literature with the support of tri-service personnel, laity and other donors, according to Ven Narada Thera.

Construction of tributary pagodas (Seya) in honour of fallen War Heroes saw its birth as a conceptual nation of HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa soon after the war and the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development on the able guidance of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence is currently engaged in such constructions, the main one being in Anuradhapura.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya at the auspicious minute 9.22 a.m Friday (29) laid the first corner-stone for construction of the Digamadulla ‘Ranaviru Maha Seya’, amidst ‘Seth Pirith’ and beats of auspicious drums (Magul Bera). The Chief Guest Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya soon after the brief foundation-laying ceremony spoke to the Chief Incumbent at Sri Shailabimbarama Temple and assured the Army’s fullest support for its construction in whatever the way possible.

Ven Nayaka Thera opined that the troops in the East made an equal contribution to the success of the war against separation, similar to the heroes who conducted the Wanni battles, and this fact should not be underestimated or given less value.

“It is this thinking that made me to start erecting this ‘Ranaviru Maha Seya’, the first in the East as a fitting tribute to the fallen War Heroes, who in fact steered clear the road for Wanni battles”, the Chief Incumbent said.
