Commander Inspects Operations at Army Owned Quarry &;amp; Metal Crusher

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army Sunday (9) afternoon took time off to visit the Army’s mega slate metal crusher at Hambantota which was recently opened.

The quarry, able to produce 30 cubes of slate metal per hour, perhaps the one and only quarry to do so in the country, cost the Army Rs 58 million upon its completion with the installation of metal crushers, adjacent to the quarry itself.

The quarry opened in September 2012 by the Commander himself is manned by a workforce of the Army and contributes largely to development work, being pursued by the Army in the Hambantota area.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya during his stopover at the site met Army personnel working there and shared a couple of views with them in order to gather first hand information on the conduct of its operations after its recent inauguration.

Troops of the Sri Lanka Engineers and Corps of Engineer Services installed all the equipment and technical accessories, made available by Chinese experts.

The first of its kind and magnitude saw its birth, subsequent to an observation, made by the Commander of the Army, during a recent visit to the area and found that non-availability of an own quarry for the Army poses many snags, related to ongoing construction sites of the Army since private suppliers often fail to honour deadlines for requirement.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, the prime-mover of the project after discussions with government authorities and Central Environment Authority, managed to secure this plot of 5 acre state land for this purpose within a short period
