Commander Inaugurates Construction of Holiday Resort in Nuwara Eliya, a Long-standing Need

Fulfilling a long-standing welfare need of Officers and their families for rest and recreation in the chilly and salubrious hills of Nuwara Eliya, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army this morning (2) laid the cornerstone for construction of a state-of-the art new holiday bungalow for Officers in the 3 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Headquarters premises in Nuwara Eliya since the Army has not hitherto been able to have its own one in this 'little England' of past colonial masters.

The Army on the directions of the Commander has already undertaken a similar project in Hawa-Eliya and the day's Chief Guest to the 3 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Headquarters at first joined the foundation-stone laying in the heart of Nuwara Eliya. All Officers and Other Ranks, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva maintains, deserve once in a way a full rest and relaxation with their loved ones after days, weeks or months of hard work and hectic commitments and schedules, but Nuwara Eliya to this date did not have a proper bungalow for that until the new project was approved.

Amid chanting of ‘Seth Pirith’ by members of the Maha Sangha, the day’s Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, together with Major General Keerthi Costa, Commander, Security Forces - Central, Major General Jaliya Senarathna, General Officer Commanding, 11 Division, Brigadier R Ganegoda, Director Engineer Service, Brigadier E.A.P Ediriweera, 112 Brigade Commander, Major W.A.M Ranathilake, Commanding Officer 3 (V) SLSR and a few others laid the foundation-stone at the auspicious minute and signalled its commencement. He also closely perused the architectural plan of the project and shared a few thoughts with the archtect on hand.

17 Corps of Engineer Services (CES) troops, commanded by Major R.S Punchihewa have undertaken the erection of this new environment-friendly building in a landscape overlooking the popular Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya. The visiting Army Chief also closely inspected other development activities occurring inside the camp premises and adjacent areas.

3 (V) SLSR rolled up a red carpet welcome to Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva on arrival at the entrance to the camp premises. The cornerstone-laying for construction of a new holiday bungalow for Officers at reasonable price in Nuwara Eliya would serve as one of the giant welfare projects of the Army.

The day’s Chief Guest afterwards in the company of several Senior Officers and the 3 (V) SLSR Commanding Officer closely watched the entire land patch of the camp and discussed ways and means of further developing the complex with zero damage to the environment and the picturesque setting. Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva also instructed relevant troops to complete the new construction within a short period while maintaining all natural surroundings.

Prior to the arrival of the Commander, Major General Keerthi Costa, Commander, Security Forces - Central cut the first soil sod for construction of the new holiday bungalow in the 3 (V) SLSR premises and prepared the ground for the visiting Army Chief to inaugurate the project.
