“All troops serving UN assignments need to be multi-skilled and showed be equally competent in English language as such skills further improve capacity for international duties of this nature,” observed the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya while addressing the Sri Lankan troops serving the UNIFIL force protection duties in Lebanon.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, now on tour in Lebanon to inspect operational duties of the Sri Lankan contingent (SRI Base) in Lebanon on Sunday (25) addressed the troops and asked them to give maximum attention on their importance of discipline since the troops in Haiti have been recognized as the best Troop Contributing Country (TCC) in MINUSTAH in Haiti.
Appreciating and highlighting the roles of Sri Lankan Peacekeepers overseas, the Commander appealed the troops to preserve the dignity of the Army as well as the good reputation of the country at large while discharging duties, roles and tasks.
Afterwards, the Commander mingled will all ranks serving the contingent and shared refreshments with them, taking time off to exchange a couple of thoughts with them. A Senior Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) acknowledged the Commander’s visit and appreciated his concerns.
The Commander who was very concerned about the operational fitness and all time preparedness closely observed the serviceability of vehicles and equipment during a brief inspection tour in the SRI Base complex.
Later on, the Commander accompanied by Brigadier Nirmal Dharmaratne, Director Operations, Army Headquarters visited the SLFP-Coy Operations Room where all operational functions are conducted and coordinated, and underlined the importance of exposure of troops for more and more training in sophisticated military equipment, modern technology such as CCTV cameras, etc.
