Commander Hails Retiring GR Veteran’s Service to the Army

The retiring Major General L.P.K.C. Wijethunga RWP RSP USP of the Gajaba Regiment (GR), the Overall Security Coordinator to the Chief of Defence Staff on invitation arrived at the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage on Thursday (10), together with his family members.

Having served the Army for more than 33 years in an exemplary manner, Major General L.P.K.C. Wijethunga RWP RSP USP, received appreciative compliments and best wishes from the Army Chief during the formal meeting where he commended the outgoing Senior Officer’s working capacity.

He also refreshed memories of the retiree’s contribution and dedicated roles before May 2009 during the height of the war against terrorism. Similarly, the Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members, invited to the occasion also inquired into the retiring Senior Officer’s future endeavours and plans.

The retiring Senior Officer also in turn thanked the Commander of the Army for his wishes and guidance while mentioning the encouragement he received in the performance of his duties. Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the outgoing Major General L.P.K.C. Wijethunga RWP RSP USP as a symbol of appreciation.

During his tenure, he held the appointments, such as Platoon Commander, Intelligence Officer, Adjutant, Company Commander, Brigade Major, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations), Commanding Officer, Senior Security Coordinating Officer, Colonel General Staff, Deputy Centre Commandant, Commander of 211 and 141 Brigades, Director, Directorate of Movement and Overall Security Coordinator.

Major General L.P.K.C. Wijethunga RWP RSP USP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 20 January 1989. Upon successful completion of his military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy-Diyatalawa and the Pakistan Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 05 October 1990. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 04 February 2022.

For his bravery and gallantry in the battlefields, he has been awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP).
