Commander Goes to Yala for Security Review

SECURITY FORCES serving areas in the deep south where a pocket of terrorist infiltrators evicted from the east were creating violence from time to time in the past 2 – 3 months received Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Commander of the Army this morning (11) who was on an inspection and review tour to the Yala area.

The visiting military chief on his arrival was welcomed by Area Commander for Hambantota, Colonel Devinda Perera and other senior officers before they commenced their progress-reviewing meeting in relation to security matters in the Hambantota District. The visiting team included Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, Commandant, Civil Defence Forces, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Jayantha Wickramarathne, DIG Nimal Lewke and several senior Army officers.

Commander Lieutenant General Fonseka received a full account of the ground realities from the Area Commander and Police authorities who are responsible for security in the area at the beginning of the meeting. He made special inquiries into the security network provided to villages surrounding Yala and Buttala areas and wanted the authorities to adopt new strategies and methods in order to further strengthen the security blanket. Lieutenant General Fonseka issued further directives to the Security Forces authorities during this meeting and wanted to seal any loopholes, if any without leaving room for LTTE violence. A large number of senior military and civil authorities attended the meeting.
