The retiring Major General E. A. D. P Edirisinghe psc, Colonel of the Regiment Gemunu Watch (GW) and General Officer Commanding of the 65 Infantry Division on the eve of his retirement day on invitation arrived at the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, together with his family members this morning (20 June).
The Army Chief during the meeting with the retiree praised him for his notable service and performance of his diverse responsibilities with dedicated commitment and selflessness while refreshing memories of the outgoing Senior Officer’s invaluable contribution and roles during the height of the war against terrorism as an Infantry Officer before May 2009 and his subsequent performances in different capacities in the post-war scenario.
Major General E. A. D. P Edirisinghe psc, having served the Army for more than 34 years thanked the Army Commander for the invitation and expressed his gratitude for the guidance the Commander extended to him all the time in the performance of his duties in different appointments and also as Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch.
The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members, invited to the occasion, also inquired about the retiring Senior Officer’s future endeavours and plans. The Army Chief simultaneously commended the invaluable support that has been given to the Senior Officer by his family members throughout his committed duties while the retiring Senior Officer was engaged in operations to safeguard the motherland elsewhere away from home.
At the end of the interactions, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Major General E. A. D. P Edirisinghe psc as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a separate gift to the family.
Major General E. A. D. P Edirisinghe psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 06 October 1988. Upon successful completion of the military training in the Intake 32B at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gemunu Watch on 05 October 1990. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the course of the span of service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 02 August 2021.
He has been holding the appointments of the Colonel of the Regiment of the Gemunu Watch and General Officer Commanding of 65 Infantry Division at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Platoon Commander of 1 and 8 Battalion of the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding of 8 Battalion of the Gemunu Watch, Officer Instructor at Sri Lanka Military Academy, General Staff Officer 2 (Training) of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Regimental Adjutant, Operational and Training Officer of 6 Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Company Commander of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, General Staff Officer 1(Operations) of the Joint Operations Headquarters, Commanding Officer of 25 Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Commander Training of the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare Junior Command Course at the Army Training School, Director Academics of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Commander of 533,563 and 112 Infantry Brigades and Rector of Southern Campus – Kotelawala Defence University.
The Senior Officer followed many local and foreign courses during his military career, such as Platoon Commander Tactics Course, Young Officers’ Course, Unit Administration Course, IHL and HR Basic Instructor Training Course, Army Command and Staff Course, Young Officers’ Course-India, Junior Command Course-India and Infantry Battalion Commanders’ Course -Russia.
The retiring Senior Officer has read for the following degrees and attained high education qualifications during his 34 years of illustrious military career, such as Bachelor of Arts (Hons), (Defence Studies) at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Master of Public Administration at the University of Colombo, Diploma in Professional Diplomacy and World Affairs at Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute, Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education Programme at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Advanced Training Programme for Talents from Maritime Silk Road Countries at Huaqiao University in Xiamen-China, Advanced Certificate Course on GIS and Applications, at University of Peradeniya. At present, he is reading for MPhil/PhD in Economics at the University of Colombo.
