Commander During Weekend Visits Sinhapura & Welioya to Receive Updates

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army during a visit to the 62 Division area in Gajasinghapura, took time off to explore possibilities of turning every inch of barren Army lands is fully utilized and cultivated in keeping with his 'Thuru Mithuru-Nawa Ratak 1 ' concept for production of own cereals, vegetables and fruits to be in line with the 'Saubhagye Dekma' policy statement of HE the President. On Sunday (24), he made a surprise visit to the Army-run Sinhapura Farm where indigenous paddy varieties, herbs, intermediate crops, fruits, cereals, like green gram, cowpeas, etc are grown and received an update on its ongoing food cultivation roles.

During his stay on the farm at Sinhapura, Lieutenant General Silva discussed ways and means of further expanding farming possibilities in areas, adjacent to the Yan Oya, the fifth longest river in the country flowing across the area, and took time off to interact with several veteran farmers in the area and provincial agricultural and irrigation instructors in order to receive their valuable inputs for Army projects. He also explored possibilities of sharing expertise knowledge on latest technologies for the benefit of farming communities in the area and how the Army could be of help to them with modern agricultural expertise, etc.

This barren land extent of about 735 acres was given to the Army in 1980s for agricultural purposes and troops after turning the soil to be fertile have been running the farm. In the wake of the national need for acceleration of production of more and more food varieties, Lieutenant General Silva introduced the conceptual ' Thuru Mithuru-Nawa Ratak 2' project back in early December last year, through which island-wide Army formations took to farming wherever possible. Sinhapura is one among major farms, owned and well-maintained by the Army.

Brigadier Sarada Samarakoon General Officer Commanding, 62 Division, Brigadier Mahinda Rajapakse, Centre Commandant GR, M.N Fernando Deputy Centre Commandant GR, civil agricultural instructors and a few senior farmers were attended to the day's programme.
