Commander Congratulates Army Woman Cricketers Picked for South African Tour


Corporal S. Niluka Karunaratne of 3 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) and Private W.K.R Vandort of 4 SLAWC who have been selected by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to play in the forthcoming South African tour were congratulated and extended best wishes by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake when he invited them to his office on Friday (11) morning.

Corporal Niluka Karunaratne, formerly a boxing player took to cricket in the year 2011 and has been playing for many tournaments both here and abroad. She won the ‘B’ Division Championship 2012 - 2013 after captaining Army Women’s Cricket team. She also participated in the tournament in Bangladesh as a member of the Mohamadeen Women’s Cricket Club.

She has been now selected to the Women’s National Cricket Team for the South African tour as an all rounder in the matches lined-up.

Private Vandort, a new entry into cricket has taken part in provincial cricket tournaments, Army Women’s Team tournaments, Defence Services Cricket tournament and a few more, beginning the first month of this year. She has been selected for the same African tour as a wicket keeper (batswoman).

During this meet, the Commander of the Army congratulated both of them on their achievements and gave away Rs 25,000/= to each of them, together with two separate sets of cricket equipment as incentives to improve their standards.

Major General U.A.B Medawala, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Cricket who has been instrumental in selecting Army cricketers and getting them sponsorships for various tournaments, introduced those cricketers to the Commander before presentation of incentives to them. Their coach was also present at the occasion.

This is the first time two woman cricketers from the Army have been selected by SLC to undertake an overseas tournament.
