Commander, Chief Guest at Inter-Regiment Boxing Championship

The Inter-Regiment Boxing Championship - 2011, organized by the Army Boxing Committee came to a close at Panagoda Army Cantonment gymnasium on Thursday (23) with the participation of 14 Regiments and 3 Women Corps teams.  

The final tussle for championship was witnessed by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army who himself has been a veteran in boxing. He graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Boxers from Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment, Sri Lanka Engineers, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Gajaba Regiment, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Commando Regiment, Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps, Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police and Engineer Service Regiment and lady boxers from 2 Women’s Corps, 3 Women’s Corps and 6 Women’s Corps competed in the final encounter.

Chairman, Army Boxing Committee Brigadier Rukmal Dias welcomed the Chief Guest on his arrival at the venue.

Boxers of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps carried the trophy in the tournament after a close encounter. Sri Lanka Artillery emerged runners-up while Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps secured the third place. Trophies to the winners were given away by the Chief Guest.

Lance Corporal M.V.G.C.S Bandara of Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) was adjudged the Best Boxer and Private S.M.R.N Samaraweera of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) became the Best Looser.

In the Women Corps sector, they had two bouts during the last phase of the championship tournament. Four uncontested winners were awarded colours at the occasion.
