Commander of the Army Commends Distinguished Service of Retiring Deputy Chief of Staff

Major General S.P.A.I.M.B. Samarakoon Hdmc Lsc, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 25 November 2024. He attended the occasion with his family members ahead of his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished 36-year service.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his career, both during the war against terrorism and the post-war period. He also acknowledged the pivotal support extended by retiring Senior Officer’s family throughout his career.

In response, Major General S.P.A.I.M.B. Samarakoon Hdmc Lsc expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support provided by the Army Chief. To mark the occasion, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a token of appreciation, along with gifts for his family.

Here follows a brief profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:

Major General S.P.A.I.M.B. Samarakoon Hdmc Lsc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet of Intake 29 on 22 February 1988. After successfully completing his military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers on 16 December 1989. Elevating through the ranks, he was promoted to Major General on 7 May 2021. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force on 29 November 2024, upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointments of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Throughout his career, he held various key appointments, including Platoon Commander of the 5th Battalion Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Motor Transport Officer of the Regimental Centre - Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Officer Instructor of the Infantry Training Centre, Adjutant of the Infantry Training Centre, Workshop Officer of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Colombo), Staff Officer 3 (Technical) of the Master General Ordnance Branch - Army Headquarters, Workshop Officer of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Udawalawa), Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Field Workshops Batticaloa, Valaichchenai and Ampara, Officer Commanding of the Medium Workshop - 3rd Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) of the Headquarters - 23 Infantry Division, Second-in-Command of the 5th Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Katubedda), Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Udawalawa) and 4th Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Officer Commanding of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers of the Sri Lanka Battalion - United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, and Officer Commanding Troops of the Forward Maintenance Area (North). Additionally, he has held the appointments of Overlooking Commandant of the Regimental Centre - Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers and Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Colombo), Staff Officer 1 of the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - Army Headquarters, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Udawalawa), Colonel (Projects) of the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - Army Headquarters, Chief Instructor of the Army School of Logistics, Colonel (Administration and Logistics) - Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS), Colonel (Administration and Quartering) of the Security Force Headquarters (West), Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) of the Security Force Headquarters (West), Commandant of the Regimental Centre - Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Director of the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - Army Headquarters, Director of the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Inspection - Army Headquarters, Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Director General of the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - Army Headquarters, Commander of the Army Logistics Command and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army Headquarters.

He also completed numerous local and foreign training courses during his military career, including Modern Motor Vehicle Technology Course, Advanced English Course, Psychological Operations Training Course (Exercise Balance Style), Unit Commanders Refresher Course, Sport Administrators Course (National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka), Young Technical Officers Course (Course No. 48) in India, Workshop Company Commanders Course (Course No. 43) in India, Logistics Staff Course (Course No. 51) in Pakistan, Senior Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Officers Course (Course No. 93) in India, Maintenance and Repair of Ground Artillery Course in China, Higher Defence Management Course (Course No. 11) in India, and Higher Defence Management Course (Course No. 13) in India.

In addition, the Senior Officer pursued higher education, earning a Certificate in Logistics and Material Management at Allama Iqbal Open University in Pakistan, a Diploma in Business Management at the College of ICM (Information Computing and Management), and a Master of Management Studies (MMS) at Osmania University in India.
