Commander Appreciates Brilliant International Sports Achievements

A representative gathering of Army achievers at international sports arena were lauded this morning (25) by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake after inviting them to his office at the Army Headquarters.

In the past few weeks, Army sportsmen and women, including several retired Army personnel in the fields of Athletics, Carom, Netball, Asian Para Games, etc brought international reputation to the Army, securing Gold, Silver and Bronze medals during the 5th World Carom Championship - 2018 (Silver), Asian Netball Tournament - 2018 (Gold) and the Asian Para Games - 2018 in Indonesia (4 Gold, 5 Silver and 5 Bronze medals).

Similarly, Lance Corporal M.D.S Ranaweera of 3 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps in the 5th World Carom Championship - 2018, held in South Korea won a Silver medal.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake during the interactive meeting spoke high of their sports skills and performances and further assured them of continued assistance for promotion of their athletic talents. In similar vein, the Commander appreciated their achievements and also those who did extremely well, for example, in Commonwealth Games, etc and expressed his intention to felicitate all of them in a separate ceremony in the near future.

Major General Dampath Fernando, Chief of Staff, Major General Anura Sudasinghe, Director General Sports, Major General Athula Silva, Centre Commandant Sri Lanka Women Corps, Brigadier Ranjith Dharmasiri, Chairman Sri Lanka Army Carom Committee, Colonel Raja Gunasekara, Secretary, Army Para Committee were among Senior Officers who were associated with the felicitation meeting at the Commander’s Office.

Lance Corporal M.D.S Ranaweera of 3 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps - 5th World Champion Carom Tournament 2018 - Silver Medal.

Lance Corporal W.N Rajapaksa of 5 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps - 13th Asian Netball Championship 2018 - Silver Medal.

Corporal R.A.L.S Ranaweera of Gajaba Regiment - Asian Para Games - Bronze Medal (Wheelchair Tennis).

Corporal C.N Buddhika Indrapala of Commando Regiment - Asian Para Games - Gold Medal (Long Jump), Bronze Medal (High Jump).

Lance Bombardier S.D.R Dharmasena of Sri Lanka Artillery - Asian Para Games - Bronze Medal (Wheelchair Tennis).

Lance Corporal K.A.S Dulan of 5 Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police - Asian Para Games - 4th Place (Javelin Throw).

Private W. Amila Prasan of Sri Lanka Light Infantry - Asian Para Games - Gold Medal (200 m), New Record.

Private H.G Palitha Bandara of Sri Lanka National Guard - Asian Para Games - Silver Medal (Shot Putt).

Private R.S Keerthi Bandara of Sri Lanka National Guard - Asian Para Games - Bronze Medal (100 m).

Private K.W.L Ajith of Sri Lanka National Guard (RFT) - Asian Para Games - 6th Place (Javelin Throw).

Warrant Officer I P.A.L Pushpakumara of Gajaba Regiment (RFT) - Asian Para Games - Bronze Medal (High Jump).

Sergeant H.M.D.P Herath of Gajaba Regiment (RFT) - Asian Para Games - Gold Medal (Javelin Throw).

Sergeant H.A.P.S Hettiarachchi of Vijayabahu Regiment - Asian Para Games - Silver Medal (Javelin Throw).
