Commander among Mourners at Late Lieutenant Colonel Bastiensze's Military Funeral

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Ármy Monday (25) evening paid his last respect to late Lieutenant Colonel H. L. C Bastiensze RWP RSP of Vijayabhahu Infantry Regiment who passed away suddenly after a brief illness.

The military funeral of the late Senior Officer, held at Dadella cemetery in Galle this evening (25) was attended by a large gathering of Army personnel and mourners. The Commander of the Army visited the house of mourning, sympathized with his family members and joined the military funeral that wended its way to the cemetery.

Lieutenant Colonel Bastiensze was serving in the 56 Division Headquarters as the General Staff Officer 1 (Admin and Quartering) at the time of his untimely death. After the funeral procession reached the entrance of the cemetery, his coffin, draped with the national flag was placed on the gun carriage before troops marched behind the remains. Soon after the Part I Order was read out, all his decorations, medals and ornaments were accordingly handed over to his next of kin in accordance with military traditions.

A gun salute that boomed away signalled that the Senior Officer who has rendered an indelible service to the organization and the country alike was laid to rest.

Family members, senior military Officers, including Major General R.K.B.S Ketakumbura, Colonel of the Regiment of the Vijayabhahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and a large gathering were among the mourners.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL H. L. C BASTIANSZ RWP RSP

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that the Colonel of the Regiment and all Ranks of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment pronounce the demise of Lieutenant Colonel H L C Bastiansz RWP RSP on 23 November 2019.

Hathmune Liyange Chiranjaya Bastiansz was born to Mr Hathumne Liyanage Sidny Roland and Mrs Walgama Kankanamage Yasawathi on 15 December 1974 in General Hospital Galle. Lieutenant Colonel H L C Bastiansz RWP RSP received his education at Richmond College Galle. He was a brilliant student in his school period.

After completion of his higher education, young H L C Bastiansz joined the Sri Lanka Army regular force as an Officer Cadet on 27 January 1995 with the intake 42 in Military Academy Diyatalawa and successfully completed his basic military training. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 21 December 1996 and subsequently posted to one of the most prestigious regiments of Sri Lanka Army, the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment. He served in numerous Command, and Staff appointments in different capacities, displaying a high degree of professionalism and utmost commitment in discharging duties and responsibilities entrusted to him.

His absolute dedication, commitment and competence displayed towards the service was recognized by promoting him to the rank of Lieutenant on 27 July 1998, Captain on 27 July 2001, Major on 27 July 2005 and Lieutenant Colonel on 26 April 2017. He held many appointments in different capacities during his long and glorious military career. Some of the significant appointments amongst them were:

Commanding Officer - 8th Battalion Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment

Staff Officer I – 58 Division

Staff Officer I – 56 Division

Lieutenant Colonel H L C Bastiansz performed duties in United Nation Peacekeeping Contingent in Haiti and as a Military Observer in Western Sahara. He had followed a number of local and overseas courses at different stages of his career where his performances were outstanding. Some of the followed courses are:

He has participated in main operations such as Rivirasa, Jayasikuru, Kinihira, Aagnikeela, North and East Humanitarian Operation conducted by Sri Lanka Army to irradiate terrorism from our mother land. He was awarded with the following medals in recognition of his unblemished and distinguished service rendered to the Sri Lanka Army and bravery displayed in battle:

Lieutenant Colonel H L C Bastiansz was a source of encouragement and inspiration to the Officers and Other Ranks of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment. He served the Army and the country with utmost dedication, displaying exemplary qualities as an officer and a gentleman during his illustrious military career that extended for more than 24 years. The exemplary leadership he gave to the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment will be remembered forever.

The last rites of Lieutenant Colonel H L C Bastiansz RWP RSP will be held on 25th November 2019 at the Dadalla Public Cemetery with full military honors. The Colonel of the Regiment and all Ranks of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment join the family members in sharing their sadness at this moment of grief.

Late Lieutenant Colonel H L C Bastiansz though you have departed, your name and the exemplary service to the nation will always be remembered. Your noteworthy contribution towards the progress of the Sri Lanka Army would be cherished by all that to follow. You will remain as a true son of Mother Lanka forever.
