Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake on hearing that fall of a boulder has destroyed the house of a soldier at Millawana, Galakumbura in Pallepola, due to torrential rains, has directed Major General S.W.L Daulagala, Director General, General Staff at the Army Headquarters to immediately provide relief and construct a new house for him in a suitable place.
Private J.A Sugath Premachandra of 11 Gajaba Regiment, a father of 3 children, including a two-month old infant, lost one leg following injuries sustained on 18 November 1999 while fighting against terrorists at Iyyakachchi. However, due to some personal reasons, he has deserted the service while employed at Ranaviru Apparels at Ekala on 5 May 2009, but reported back for duties on 5 August 2013. Upon his return to Senapura Army Camp, it had been observed the said disable soldier during his absence from service has contracted a chronic skin disease which he had been suffering until then.
Nevertheless, his senior officers on humanitarian grounds has again granted leave to him for Ayurvedic medical treatment, but he had once again failed to report back to duties until a couple of days ago before torrential rains and landslides swept his house when inmates were away from home.
Following directives of the Commander, the visiting Major General Daulagala immediately, visited the location and held discussions with family members and the Divisional Secretariat in order to find an alternative 10 perch land area where the Army could build a new house, considering his plight.
Although the said soldier was disable and eligible for all welfare measures, being provided by different Army wings and the Seva Vanitha Army Branch, his absence from service for more than 4 ¼ years has deprived him all those benefits.
However, Major General Daulagala immediately took all necessary steps to provide the affected family with basic amenities and moved the family away until completion of the new construction after the Divisional Secretariat allocates the land block. Army Engineers are to begin the construction shortly with the support of Gajaba Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit. Mrs Saroja Daulagala, Chairperson, Gajaba Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit too accompanied the representative of the Commander of the Army, Major General Daulagala.
Similarly, the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C) on the instructions of Major General U.A.B Medawela, Commander, SFHQ-C dispatched a team of senior officers to the location on Saturday (18) to provide immediate relief measures to the affected soldier and his family.
