35 new houses, erected by 18 Regiments of the Sri Lanka Army, following a conceptual initiative of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva are to be formally handed over to families of fallen War Heroes and a selected group of disable War Heroes during ceremonies to be held at the end of September 2015.
To be in line with the Commander's visionary project, 18 Regiments swiftly jumped into action and began constructing 35 new houses in recipients’ own land slots, offered by two members of selected beneficiaries from each respective regiment for erection under the Phase 1 of the project which began in the third week of April this year to coincide with Ranaviru commemorative events.
This novel project got underway after the Commander closely observed and evaluated the need for proper and decent housing facilities for family members of fallen War Heroes and some of those differently able ones, who have rendered an invaluable service to the country as true patriotic sons of Sri Lanka during the war for peace before May 2009.
Coordinated by the Directorate of Welfare, the construction project has reached its almost completion and the Phase I, is to be wound up by the end of this month. The Phase II of the project will commence shortly with a view to providing a similar number of new houses to another segment of War Hero families and disable War Heroes on the directions of the Commander of the Army.
Each house, worth Rs 1.5 million and 60% of the cost is to be provided by respective Regiments while the rest is to be supplemented by the Directorate of Welfare. Additional costs however have to be shared by the recipient, if they so need any alterations or extensions to the architecture.
Under the Phase I, relatives of fallen War Heroes and injured War Heroes from Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA), Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC), Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), Gemunu Watch (GW), Gajaba Regiment (GR), Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR), Commando Regiment (CR), Special Forces (SF), Military Intelligence Corps (MIC), Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC), Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps (SLAMC), Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC), Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) and Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC), are among the beneficiaries under this new scheme of the Commander.
