Commander's Directive for Data Networking Further Extended to Army's Material Management Systems


Expanding the horizons of IT use in the Army further, Directorate of Ordnance Services, the wing responsible for material management, including procurement, store-keeping and stock controlling, entered technologically-advanced automated ordnance material management system, beginning today (9), adding a new chapter in uploading of Army data.

The move, designed to achieve higher productivity and introduce advanced IT technology to the organization came about with the blessings of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who was instrumental in introducing IT networking to the Army a few years ago.

Inauguration of automated data system for the Army’s material and procurement management took place Thursday (9) morning during a brief ceremony in the presence of the Commander of the Army at Army Headquarters. Today’s addition of software material management system cost the Army about Rs 10 million, and necessary funds for the project were made available by the Commander himself.

The automated procurement management system and material management system, thus introduced encompasses all functional features creating possibility to monitor and manage procurement cycle and its plan, and settle bills, see real time status quo of any tenders, updates, etc which can be viewed online by authorities in the Army.

Sri Lanka Army in its data network has hitherto maintained central human resource management system, welfare management system, hospital management system, bill status monitoring system, assets management system, weapon management system, transport management system, hotel management system, training information system, project progress monitoring system, etc before material management system was introduced this morning.

With the introduction of material management system, Sri Lanka Army introduces 100% indigenous Sri Lankan softwares, for which patent rights can be claimed, it was pointed out.

Directorate of IT with its able software engineers made the project a huge success and expects to embark on a new phase to introduce more and more advanced IT technology to the organization.

Presentations on procurement management system and material management system were also submitted to the occasion by Brigadier R.V Udawatte, Director, Directorate of Ordnance Service and Brigadier Sanath Wickremasinghe, Director, Directorate of IT.
