Civilians Offer Backhoes & Support Troops Clearing Road Sideways

Troops of the Headquarters of the 51 Division serving under the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) with the intention of clearing the scrub along roadways as precautionary measures against transmission of Dengue, Pollen Allergy infections and prevention of road accidents carried out a clearing programme from Thirunelveli to Navatkuli on Monday (26).

A total of 100 soldiers covering major and minor roads and motorable pathways completedd the project on the guidelines given by the Commander Security Forces Jaffna, Major General Priyantha Perera. The General Officer Commanding of the 51 Division closely supervised the task which was overwhelmingly supported by members of the public by offering the services of backhoe loader vehicles for clearing and collecting.

The initiative was highly welcomed and appreciated by the District Secretary for Jaffna and the project was also meant to support the ongoing COVID-19 precautions. Some civilians even went to the extent of providing refreshments to the troops, engaged in the civil community-oriented 'Shramadana' for social security.

As the second leg of the project, 11 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment troops meanwhile continued their roadside clearance project in Polikkandy and Atchchuveli areas in Jaffna District on Tuesday (27).

The community-oriented project was carried out on the directions of the commander - 521 Brigade, Colonel Mahen Salwathura.

Members of the general public, Valvettithurai Municipal Council and Puttur Pradeshiya Sabha workers contributed to the project.
