Chief of Staff Given Rousing Welcome by His Class-mates & Alma Mater

Matale-town based all walks of life and Old Boys of the St Thomas College in Matale on Friday (22) threw a rousing reception to the recently-appointed Chief of Staff of the Army, Major General Shavendra Silva when he arrived in his home town after his elevation to the Office of the Chief of Staff in the Army.

Upon his arrival in the town, he was warmly received and garlanded by senior citizens, Principal, Mr Vijitha Dissanayake and conducted to receive religious blessings, organized in one corner of a road where a team of Buddhist monks observed religious rites and rituals and invoked blessings on the visiting Chief of Staff. A brief oration (Anusasana) spelt out as to why this reception was staged by the grateful people of Matale as an appreciation of his services to the Nation. A subsequent felicitation ceremony in the school auditorium honoured him and awarded mementos where he also was invited to pin insignia on new prefects of the College.

Later on, Major General Silva in his brief address to the occasion thanked his alma-mater for felicitating him in an elaborate gesture and urged the student community to work for the betterment of the country’s future as members of one family.
