Ceremony for School Text Book Distribution Held in Jaffna


THE NATIONAL ceremony for distribution of school text books for the year 2010 was held in Jaffna on Wednesday (9), attended by several cabinet ministers.

Ministers Susil Premajayantha (MP), Anura Priyadarshana Yapa (MP), Douglas Devananda (MP), Nirmala Kotalawala (MP), and M Sachithranandan, Deputy Minister for Education who flew to Jaffna were received by Major General L.B.R. Mark, Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna at the Palaly air base.  

Ministers later on arrived at Wembady Girls High School in Jaffna where the main ceremony took place. At the beginning of the day’s ceremonies, guests set  a few  white pigeons free, as a symbol for new – found freedom  after 30 years. Hoisting of  the national flag followed .   

The most attractive feature of the event was the colourful cultural show, presented by girl students from Jaffna Central College, Jaffna Public School, Jaffna Hindu Vidyalaya, Wembady Girls’ High School, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo, Ananda Shasthralaya, Kotte, Kirindiwela Central College, Pushpadana Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy.    

Later Minister Susil Premajayantha and other ministers distributed new text books among a representative gathering of students at Wembady Girls High School. About 60,000 exercise books were also distributed among students in the entire Jaffna peninsula at the same time.

State officials, teachers, students and parents of those students were present on this occasion.  Army with Police personnel provided security and other assistance, needed for the success of the event.
