CAVT Coordinates Project for Distribution of 384 Eye Spectacles

A community welfare project, spearheaded by the Centre for Army Vocational Training (CAVT) at Saliyawewa, covering the people in 13 & 14 zones of the Rajanganaya southern sector, got underway on Tuesday (7) at Kalaoya Sri Vijaya Bodhirajaramaya temple, close to the CAVT.

Following coordination done by the CAVT Commandant, Dr Nimal Weerakoon of Kandy Opticals Pvt Ltd, together with a team of medical staff during a mobile eye clinic at the above temple distributed a total of 384 pairs of spectacles among under privileged people who have been affected with vision defects.

The medical team during the mobile clinic screened more than 500 civilians for eye ailments and defects in vision before they were recommended the use of spectacles. In addition, those who need eye lenses and transplantations were also screened during the same clinic since Narammala Jubilee Lion Club had come forward to foot the cost and provide such assistance free of charge.

The inaugural occasion of the mobile eye clinic was attended by Rajanganaya Divisional Secretary, Administrative Officer at Rajanganaya Divisional Secretariat, Principal at Rajanganaya Mahasen Vidyalaya, Bank of Ceylon Manager at Saliyawewa, Saliyawewa Businessmen and Gramaseva Officials in respective village areas in Rajanganaya, Commandant CAVT, several Army officers and Lion Club members.
