Canadian and Rotary Club Donors Want to See Children Sleep Well

Canada-based ‘Sleeping Children Around the World’ programme with the intention of providing a sound sleep to children in Anuradhapura and Vavuniya districts distributed a large range of sleeping accessories among students in 39 schools within six days (Sept 20 - 26).

The stock containing mosquito nets, mats, pillows, pillow cases, towels, bed sheets included a separate consignment of school bags, writing books, shorts and skirts. The donation of stocks, made by a group of Canadian philanthropists to the Kelaniya Rotary Club took place in respective schools with the coordination of 211 Brigade of the Army as part of its civil-military cooperation.

Each student in all 39 schools received one mosquito net, one mat, one pillow, two pillow cases, two towels, two bed sheets, six exercise books, one school bag and two shorts / skirts as the gift package during separate brief meetings with students in those schools. A group of Canadian donors and Kelaniya Rotary Club members were associated with the visit to those schools.

To coincide with this programme, Mr Kamal Siriwardena of Kelaniya meanwhile offered a Buddha statue to the Punewa Palugollewa Viharaya for veneration. It was also placed on the same occasion in the temple premises under the auspices of the temple’s incumbent, Ven Siddhamulle Mangala Thera in the presence of the visiting group of donors. Family members of Mr Siriwardena were also associated with the placement of the statue.

Canadian and Kelaniya Rotary Club representatives, 21 Division General Officer Commanding Brigadier P.U.S Withanage, 211 Brigade Commander, Brigadier P.M.S.A Pallemulla, Civil Affairs Coordinating Officer Lieutenant Colonel T.M.J.B Tennakoon, several senior officers, parents and gatherings of students attended the series of ceremonies that distributed those items.
