Buttala OCDC’s 2nd Annual Seminar Sessions Touch on Current Topics

The inaugural opening session of the Army’s Buttala Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC) - organized Seminar 2/2016 on the theme, ‘Empowering Leadership through Diverse Knowledge’ got underway at its main auditorium on 19 December.

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army attended the inauguration as the Chief Guest on behalf of the Commander of the Army.

Traditional oil lamp lighting paved the way for the OCDC Commandant, Brigadier D. M. D. C. D Gunawardana to deliver his welcome speech.

Major General Goonetilleke afterwards delivered the keynote address, laying a solid platform to unfold seminar sessions on the relevant subject theme.

The first session of the day on ‘leadership’, was chaired by Brigadier I.P Ranasinghe. Colonel D.B.S.N Bothota, Colonel U.U.K.L.S Perera and Colonel E.A.D.P Edirisinghe who respectively educated the participants on ‘Mission Command as a Tool to Enhance the Leadership’, ‘Comparing and Contrasting Mission Command with the Command adopted by the Sri Lanka Army during the Eelam Conflict’ and ‘Application of Mission Command in Hybrid Warfare Environment’.

The final session of the day was on ‘Cyber Security’. Brigadier K. M. R. P. Karunathilaka chaired the session, sharing his knowledge on Evolution of Cyber Warfare. Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) J. T. V. S. Weerawarna and Colonel S. P. P. Pakshaweera afterwards respectively educated the gathering on Cyber Security Awareness as a Critical Driver to National Security and Cyber Security at Tactical Level.

The Day-2 consisted of three main sessions. The first session of the day was on ‘Current Affairs’ was chaired by Brigadier G.V Ravipriya, Director Training of the Army who shared his knowledge and experiences on ‘The Importance of the Silk Route in South Asia in general and Sri Lanka in Particular’.

Professor W.I Siriweera and Mr S Bogahawatte educated the participants on the topics ‘The Irrigation System of Sri Lanka and Its Impact on Urbanization’ and ‘Solar Power; Energy of the Future’ respectively.

While chairing the fourth session of the seminar, Brigadier H. T. Wickramasekara educated the participants on ‘Nutrition and its Impact on Soldiering’. Colonel R. M. M Moneragala and Lieutenant Colonel S. H. P. D Thilakarathne also shared their knowledge in the session on the topics ‘Stress Management Through Effective Psychology’ and ‘Commanders’ Responsibility for Physical Fitness of a Unit’ respectively.

The final session of the seminar was chaired by Brigadier D. M. U. G Bandara. He shared his knowledge on ‘The Role of Psychological Operations in Defeating Extremism’. Colonel L. C. R Jayasuriya meanwhile educated the attendees on the topic ‘Information Operations and Its Impact on the Masses’.

All the sessions followed interactive question and answer sessions, allowing the participants to express and share their views and impressions.

The Commandant, OCDC, Brigadier D.M.D.C.D Gunawardana awarded certificates of appreciation to the participants.

The two-day seminar concluded with the closing remarks, delivered by the Chief Instructor, Officer Career Development Centre, Colonel W. Chandrasiri.

Major General P.U.S Vithanage, Commander, Security Forces - Central, Major General A. P. de Z Wickramaratne, Director General General Staff (DGGS) and Major General R.A. Nugera also participated in the seminar.

Sixty-one (61) senior officers of the Sri Lanka Army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Major attended the seminar 2/2016.
