The living legend, Brigadier Anthony Pius Rathnarajah David’s story is one of honour, distinction, and unwavering commitment having joined the ranks as one of the first 10 Cadets, along with three Lieutenant Colonels gazetted on that historic day of the founding of the Ceylon Army in 1949.

Brigadier Anthony Pius Rathnarajah David, being perhaps the only survivor as the most senior Officer alive is among the most senior Officer in the Ceylon Light Infantry aka the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI).

Born and raised in Jaffna, Brigadier David's educational journey led him to St. Patrick's College and Vaddukkodai Jaffna College. In 1949, he took the momentous step of enlisting in the newly-formed Ceylon Regular Force. His training qualified him to enter the prestigious Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom, and later to the reputed Sandhurst Royal Military Academy from 1950 to 1951.

Upon completing his training, Brigadier David was commissioned and enlisted to the Ceylon Light Infantry (CLI). Throughout his illustrious career, he held numerous key positions, including Platoon Commander, Staff Captain "A" at Army Headquarters, and Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion Ceylon Light Infantry, to name just a few.

His dedication extended beyond Sri Lanka's borders, as he contributed to global peacekeeping efforts by serving as a UN Peacekeeping Observer in Lebanon. He furthered his military education with courses in the United Kingdom and India, constantly striving to enhance his skills.

One of Brigadier David's most significant achievements was his involvement in "Operation Monty," the first internal operation of the Ceylon Army, launched in 1952. This operation aimed to counter the influx of illegal South Indian immigrants brought in by smugglers to the North Western coast, in support of Royal Ceylon Navy coastal patrols and police operations. Renamed as Task Force Anti Illicit Immigration (TaFII) in 1963, it continued until 1981. Brigadier David's pioneering efforts laid the foundation for this operation.

In addition to his role in ‘Operation Monty’, Brigadier David played a crucial part in maintaining law and order during the 1953 Hartal and 1956 Gal Oya Valley riots under provincial emergency regulations.

Today, Brigadier (Retd) David enjoys a well-deserved retirement in Ontario, Canada while still retaining a keen interest in regimental matters.
