Brigadier A.G.S.M Perera RWP RSP USP Laid to Rest amid Military Honours

The funeral of Brigadier A.G.S.M Perera RWP RSP USP of Gemunu Watch (GW), Commander, Air Mobile Brigade who passed away on Tuesday (14) at the Kudaoya Commando Training School took place Friday (17) afternoon at Borella General Cemetery amidst military honours and a gathering of his close military colleagues, family members and mourners.

A mammoth gathering of Officers and Other Ranks, including Major General S.R.B Aluvihare RWP RSP ndu psc, Adjutant General who represented the Commander of the Army at the cemetery and Major General S.W.B Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, Colonel of the Regiment of GW were present at the military funeral.

GW troops in accordance with military traditions at first received the remains, presenting arms near the entrance to the Borella General Cemetery before being placed in the gun carriage, having draped it in the National flag. As the funeral procession reached the main entrance to the cemetery, a representative gathering of Army soldiers formally, received the coffin and solemnly inched their way towards the crematorium burial ground after all of them, together with family members lined up behind the coffin.

The formal Special Part I Order, issued by the Commander of the Army was then read out to the mourners by Major W.D.S Rodigo RSP psc as the occasion turned solemn. Troops in conformity with military traditions then saluted the remains, presenting a symbolic gun salute, the highest tribute a military officer, could get in the event of his demise.

Minutes after the Last Post, the bugle call that sounded, indicating that the soldier had now gone to his final rest, the remains were carried to the burial ground.

Seconds later, Major General S.W.B Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc presented the bereaved wifeand the family with decorations and medals Brigadier A.G.S.M Perera RWP RSP USP had earned during his illustrious career, a general tradition in the Armed Forces.

Brigadier A.G.S.M Perera RWP RSP USP joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 24 July 1992 and received his Presidential commission on 09 April 1994 and was posted to the Gemunu Watch. He sustained injuries during the height of the fight against LTTE terrorism and served different offices, capacities as a brave infantryman and appointments before his untimely death.
