EXTENDING its friendly hand of assistance once again, the Army in Mannar swiftly moved in and constructed two temporary constructions for two Roman Catholic schools in the area since existing school buildings were not adequate for conduct of all the classes.
Authorities at Adampan Roman Catholic Mixed school and Andankulam Roman Catholic Mixed school informed educational authorities as well as the Army troops that they were in dire need of extra space for conduct of classes as usual since the student population in the area was fast rising.
Security Forces Area Headquarters and 215 Brigade readily obliged taking the challenge into their hands. They promptly collected cadjans, wooden poles and tinted sheets that have been kept reserved for Army use and took them to both school locations on Army heavy vehicles after necessary approvals were obtained from regional authorities of education for construction of those much needed buildings.
Within a matter of seven days both schools received two new cadjan-thatched school buildings, a long-felt need of both schools, thanks to untiring efforts of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) Army troops serving the area.
During two special ceremonies on July 7th last week, attended by Deputy Director of Education for Madu Mr Pathinadan Cruze, Mannar Security Forces Area Headquarters Brigadier M.A.M Dias, 215 Brigade Commander Colonel V. Liyanage, Civil Affairs Coordinator Lieutenant Colonel N. Mahavithana, 3 RFT VIR Commanding Officer Major S. Randeniya and several senior state officials, principals at both schools symbolically acknowledged the official hand-over of both new buildings.
Students in both schools, supported by their teachers received the guests warmly and presented their talents during ceremonies as parents too joined the opening of both new temporary buildings that could accommodate several more classes in each of them. During the ceremonies, both principals profusely thanked the Army for their initiatives.
