The Sri Lanka Army, the country's most-sought service provider and indispensable ‘Protectors of the Nation’ which has reached new heights in the sphere of infantry, warfare skills, nation-building tasks and technology after its landmark birth in 1949 is set to enter its 74th milestone anniversary on 10 October 2023.
The year’s simple, yet dignified anniversary ceremonies to commence on 27 September 2023 would give pride of place to religious ceremonies of all faiths as has been the tradition since the inception of the organization.
Invocation of blessings on all Army and Regimental Flags at Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of Tooth) and Kataragama 'Kirivehera' follows a special Mass at Borella All Saints' Church, prayers at Kollupitiya Jumma Mosque and a Special 'Pooja' at Mayurapathi Kovil in Colombo 6 respectively during 27 Sept-4 October 2023 before an all-night 'Pirith' chanting ceremony and offer of alms to members of the 'Maha Sangha' take place on 5-6 October at the Army HQ.
The anniversary ceremony reaches its apex with formal military ceremonies at the War Heroes’ Memorial at Battaramulla (6 October), Army Day Parade and the All Rank dinner on 10 October in keeping with military traditions.
Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest and the live-wire behind all arrangements is expected to grace those segments of the anniversary ceremonies.
In addition, the Commander of the Army is scheduled to meet permanently injured War Heroes at Anuradhapura wellness resort, 'Abhimansala 1' and inquire about their well-being before gift parcels are distributed among them on account of the anniversary. Similarly, a special event at Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment's (VIR) HQ at Boyagane on 1 October 2023, coincident with the International Children's Day would distribute a stock of school essentials to the students in VIR families as a special anniversary gesture.
