BASL Delegates During Meet with Head, NOCPCO Seek Possibilities of Resumption of Court Proceedings

A high level delegation of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) on Monday (14) called on General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), at the Army HQ and had a cordial meeting with him over several concerns, related to their professional work.

The delegation, headed by Mr Saliya Pieris, PC, President, BASL, Secretary, BASL inquired into the status quo as regards the spread and control of COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing travel restrictions, island-wide operations at ICCs and Quarantine Centres, and possibilities of re-opening of Courts for routine hearings and trials while highlighting the need for resumption of legal procedures to mete out justice.

General Shavendra Silva explained the overall picture of the NOCPCO roles, now in place and expressed optimism in future if the public could continue to cooperate with health authorities since HE the President and the government are keen on bringing normalcy to the country as early as possible. He also assured that he would consult the NOCPCO Task Force and see possibilities of formulating an alternative work plan in this regard.
