Troops of the 2 Sri Lanka Rifle Corps (SLRC) under command to the 112 Brigade of the Security Force Headquarters - Central volunteered to assist civilians, affected due to landslides, floods and emergencies with onset of torrential rains in the general areas of Dehiyanwala, Muthiyangana temple, Water Board, PHI office and Sumanathissagama in the past 72 hours.
Inclement weather patterns, accompanied by thundering and windy storms in the general areas of Badulla and its suburbs caused havoc and destruction, obstructing vehicle traffic and normalcy in the area. A few minor landslides were also reported with weather patterns worsening.
2 SLRC troops of the 112 Brigade swiftly moved to those affected areas and assisted the evacuation of civilians to safer places while simultaneously clearing waterways, anicuts and culverts enabling flood water to gush away. At the same time, troops assisted diversion of vehicle traffic and cleared the roads under the supervision of the 112 Brigade Commander, Brigadier Anura Dissanayake.
More than 42 Army personnel of the 112 Brigade and 57 Army personnel of the 2 SLRC volunteered to clean those affected areas and assisted the civilians, threatened by continuing rainfalls. Lieutenant Colonel K Jayaweera, Commanding Officer, 2 SLRC closely supervised those operations that took place during 29 - 30 October.
Meanwhile, due to the inclement weather conditions prevailing around the Badulla and Passara areas, troops of the 2 Sri Lanka Rifle Corps of the 112 Division carried out cleaning of debris left behind due to gushing flood water in the area and resultant earth slips and earth mounds on 30th October 2021.
In addition, troops distributed the drinking water bottles among displaced civilians on the instructions of Brigadier D.A.K Dissanayake, Commander 112 Brigade on 31st October 2021.
