Australian High Commissioner on Tour to North Calls on Jaffna Commander

The Australian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Ms Kathy Klugman on Monday (19) paid a courtesy call on Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna at the latter’s office, en route to attend a ceremony for handover of houses, built with funds from Australian aid agency (AusAID).

Major General Hathurusinghe during the cordial meeting with her outlined the status quo with regard to multiple development projects that have been undertaken by the Army in the peninsula, and numerous other measures, in place to promote civil-military close co-operation and public relations. The Jaffna military chief during his presentation to the visiting envoy touched on the question of law and order,  security aspects and how the life in Jaffna has been made easier with removal of road blocks, barriers, etc in the aftermath of the victory over terrorism.

In response to a query, Major General Hathurusinghe pointed out a couple of social reasons that would have been attributable to the most recent increase in incidence of thefts, burglaries and some criminal activities in the peninsula. He also elaborated on steps that are being taken by the Army to further support security roles of the Police and civil administration.

The development co-operation agency, AusAID is scheduled to erect some 352 new houses in Palai and Maruthankerni areas for the use of displaced civilians in the peninsula. The Australian envoy during her stay in the North was to visit Kilinochchi before she flies back to Colombo on Wednesday (21).
