ASVU in One More Phase Gives Away 167 Scholarships, worth over Rs 2 million to War Hero Children

Giving moral encouragement as well as a practical economic support to War Hero families, the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), presided by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake once again showed its motherly care and distributed scholarships to 167 more students of War Hero families to the value of some Rs 2 million to coincide with the International Children's Day and the Army 65th Anniversary during a ceremony at Colombo 2, Defence Service College Saturday (4) morning.

The ceremony, headed by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake as the Chief Guest saw those 167 students learning in Grade 1-5 receive Rs 10,000, those in Grade 6-10 Rs 15,000 and those learning up to university level Rs 20,000 as cash deposits in their bank books, out of which a monthly instalment is paid to the recipient by the respective bank until he/she enters the university. People's Bank, Homagama, appreciative of the ASVU project, offered its incentives to the scholarship recipients by way of gifting book parcels, wrist-watches, wall clocks, umbrellas, etc on the same occasion.

During the same ceremony, the ASVU donated a cash gift of Rs 60,000 to the daughter of an Army officer serving the Directorate of Army Medical Services for purchase of batteries and other accessories for her hearing (ear) aid equipment since the family could not afford the heavy cost.

This phase of the project too has been organized on the directions of the Commander of the Army who is of the view that the care and social stability, being awarded to the soldier through welfare assistance of this nature, would certainly help increase his productivity and efficiency as part of the 'economic' burdens that plague him and his family are eased and resolved to a greater extent.

Distribution of those scholarships was joined by the Chief Guest, ASVU Vice President and several executive members of the ASVU. Mrs Sepali Samarasinghe, ASVU Vice President welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival at the place. Intermittent entertaining features of the 'Ranwala Balakaya' Folk Songs and colourful stage presentations, coupled with performances of 'Derana' Little Stars, added glamour and colour to the day's event. A gathering of parents, senior ASVU  members and Army officers were present there to witness the day's ceremony.
