ASVU 37th Anniversary Marked Gifting Laptops to Students

Ladies in the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) attaching true meaning of welfare to the 37th anniversary day (12 July 2021) as per its mandate gifted 10 new laptops to students of Army and civil staff families on the recommendation of Regimental Seva Vanitha Units, operating under the ASVU.

Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU, together with several Executive Members of the ASVU symbolically awarded one such laptop to a student this morning (12) at the ASVU office, minutes after a meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva. Remaining 9 more laptops were to be distributed at Regimental level in close coordination with respective Seva Vanitha Units. Some of those selected students were from the civil sector employees serving in the Army.

Soon after presentation of the maiden copy of the anniversary ‘Mehewaraka Asiriya’ pictorial magazine to the Army Chief earlier on the day at the Commander’s Office, arrangements have been made to send those copies to all Branches, Directorates and formations in the Army, Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka Navy HQ, Sri Lanka Air Force HQ, Sri Lanka Police HQ, Civil Security Department HQ, SFHQs, Divisions, Regimental Centres and all Units in the Army.

To mark the anniversary spirits, a special lunch treat was served to Officers, Other Ranks and Civil Staffers working at the Sri Jayewardenepura Army HQ on Monday (12) as a token of goodwill and appreciation of their services on a suggestion, made by Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU.

By Monday (12) noon, a representative group of ASVU ladies proceeded to the National Institute of Mental Health Half-Way Home, Mulleriyawa and entertained about 150 patients in Ward Nos 5 & 6 to a sumptuous meal on account of the 37th anniversary.

The ASVU, a stimulant and a driving force that looks after the well-being and welfare of the next of kin of fallen/ wounded and those serving War Heroes of the Army and civil staffers while operating as a parallel welfare wing, run by spouses of senior Army Officers, turned 37 years of age on Monday (12 July 2021).

The Army Seva Vanitha, founded on 12 July 1984 in accordance with provisions as stipulated in the Government Gazette No 10 of 1982 during its life-span of 37 years with its Regimental Seva Vanitha Units, established in the year 1998, has to-date played the role of a "second mother" to all Army families, children and spouses of fallen and wounded patriotic War Heroes and has stood as a tower of strength to the Army by way of providing them with Housing, Scholarships to Children, Crutches, Artificial Limbs and Wheelchairs to the wounded in action, conduct of pre Schools and Day Care Centers for Children of War Heroes and children with special needs, financial aid at times of need for house-building, medical care, natural disasters, and more importantly, the moral courage and care to the injured war heroes by visiting them in hospital with basic needs, spiritual projects for well-being and attending to the care and support during their convalescence.

The constitution of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit provides for the membership of the organization to be comprised of the spouses of Army Officers as well as Lady Officers. The Executive committee comprises of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Public Relations officer whilst the working committee comprising of members of the organization support the executive committee in realizing their objectives.
