Army Women’s Soccer Team Wins

Sri Lanka Army women’s soccer team after a tough fight at the finals beat Sri Lanka Police 3-2, posing a tie-breaker. The match was played at Police Grounds, Thimbirigasyaya early last week. 

The all-island Women’s Open Club Football Tournament 2010, organized by Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) took place during July 31 - August 2 with huge gatherings of sportsmen and fans. 

Army women showed their supremacy right throughout the tournament staying unbeaten. It beat Gampaha 2-0, Badulla 1-0, Galle 6-0 and Kurunegala 2-0 while taking a walkover from Wennappuwa uncontested.

Woman soldiers managed to bag two individual awards as well. Private I.D.M.M  Iddagoda was adjudged the Best Player in the tournament while Private A.M.A.S Wijerathne was selected the Best Goal Keeper.

The Army Women’s team included Sergeant U.K.D.K Gunasekara, Corporal T.G.D.K Samarasinghe, Corporal H.A.M Abekoon, Corporal I.M.B Nanda Kumari, Corporal R.D Kanthi Mallika, Lance Corporal R.M.K Wijewardana, Lance Corporal S.H.C.K Jayaratne (team leader), Lance Corporal L.P.P.K Pathirana, Private A.D Almeda, Private H.N.D Fernando, Private I.D.M Iddagoda, Private W.A.D Wanigasekara, Private H.A.C Perera, Private D.I Lakmali, Private H.W Dayananda, Private H.M.M Madushani, Private K.A.D.N.C Karunaratne, Private M.P.A Kumari and Private A.M.A Wijeratne.
