Army Weightlifter Returns Home with His Gold Medal

Sri Lanka Army’s sports and athletic skills once again received world-wide recognition during Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship Tournament in Cape Town, South Africa (October 10-14) when the weightlifter, Lance Corporal C.S.S.P Wijesuriya won a Gold Medal in Weightlifting (56 kg class), bringing credit and reputation to the Army and the country at large.

Brigadier M.H.P Mihindukulasuriya, President, Army Weightlifting Association (AWA), Lieutenant Colonel M.C De Soyza, Vice President, AWA, officials from Ministry of Sports, several Army officers, other ranks and well-wishers Friday (14) evening warmly welcomed him back home at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Lance Corporal Wijesuriya of 2 Sri Lanka General Service Corps (SLAGSC) of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force after he joined the Army in 2004 has been successful in a series of Weightlifting tournaments and events in the past several years both at home and overseas.

In the year 2010, he clinched the 6th place in Weightlifting (56 kg class) during the Commonwealth Tournament in India and the 13th place in the Asian Games 2010 in China. In addition, he secured the first places in the recent 37th National Sports Festival (2011), National Weightlifting Tournament (2011), National Sports Festival (2008), Defence Services Weightlifting Tournament (2008) and a few other local events.
     
Lance Corporal Wijesuriya, to his credit secured the first place in four consecutive Inter-Regiment Weightlifting Tournaments, held in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.  He was also adjudged the Best Weightlifter during those four years.
