Army Troops Prevent Nilwala River Bank Burst

In line with a concept of His Excellency the President, the "Clean Sri Lanka" national programme commenced on 01 January 2025. As part of its first phase, the 'Save Nilwala' initiative, organised by the District Secretariat – Matara, was launched on 13 March 2025. On this occasion, the banks of the Nilwala River in Akuressa area were cleaned with the support of the Sri Lanka Army. Under the guidance of the Commander of the Army, troops of the 3 (V) Gemunu Watch participated in this effort.

As the second phase of the 'Save Nilwala' programme, a month-long cleaning campaign along the Nilwala riverbanks commenced on 01 April 2025 and will continue until 01 May 2025. A group of Army personnel is engaged in daily cleaning process. By 07 April 2025, approximately 850 metres of riverbank had been cleaned on both sides of the river.
