Army Troops Prepared New Play Ground at Vellamullivaikkal Opened


11 Sri Lanka Artillery troops serving 681 Brigade of 68 Division in the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) with the express intention of promoting sports among Vellamullivaikkal students, prepared a new playground with the help of Army machinery and their own labour.

Financial assistance for this project was provided by FRIDSRO organization and more than 100 soldiers took part in the project under the direction of Major General L.B.R Mark, Commander, SFHQ-MLT.

On Thursday (28), a ceremony at the new playground dug at Vellamullivaikkal (West) High Junior School premises, opened it in the presence of a large gathering, including Rev. Jacob Perera, Chairman, FRIDSRO, Swedish representatives of FRIDSRO, Brigadier S.K Hewavitarana, 683 Brigade Commander, Brigadier T.J Nanayakkara, 68 Division General Officer Commanding, 682 Brigade Commander, Commanding Officer, 11 Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment and a large gathering of sports-lovers and civilians in the area.

The new playground thus opened is available to all students and sports clubs in Mullaittivu area which has in the past recorded special sports skills. In the year 2013, it was Mullaittivu District, which sent the most number of athletes and sportsmen to represent the Northern Province in the 2013 Provincial Sports Tournament.

The inaugural football match between Ampalavanpokkanai Maha Vidyalaya and Mullivaikkal Maha Vidyalaya warmed the new playground amidst roaring applause and cheering. A display of music talents by Commando Regiment troops provided entertainment throughout the entire football match.
