Army Troops Extend Full Support for Conduct of Mahanayake’s State Funeral

Sri Lanka Army troops on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Chrishanthe De Silva, have extended their fullest cooperation and the State honours to the conduct of the funeral ceremony of Most Ven Galagama Sri Aththadassi Thero, Mahanayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter of Siyam Nikaya whose cremation was to take place on Sunday (13) afternoon .

Lieutenant General Chrishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army paid his respect to the late Mahanayake at Asgiriya last evening after visiting the venue together with a few senior officers.

In keeping with State traditions, the troops attend vigil duties around the area along the funeral route and a group of uniform-dressed troops would honour the final segment of the cremation arrangements with a gun salute, presented by Sri Lanka Artillery troops.

Soon after the death of the Mahanayake was announced, 11 Division troops under the Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C), volunteered to clean the monastery premises, funeral site and provided sanitary facilities, etc to the mourners. Under the close supervision of Major General D.S.N.K Senadheera, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 11 Division, troops have been engaged in multiple service projects in consultation with organizers of the funeral and the District Secretary for Kandy.

Major General A.P de Z Wickramaratne, Commander, SFHQ-C and Major General D.S.N.K Senadheera, GOC, 11 Division have already paid respect to the remains.
