The relocated new sale centre for the local flora and tropical flowers at Battaramulla which was brought to completion by Army troops in less than fifteen days was opened and its stalls were shared among vendors during a ceremony Saturday (15) evening.
The 84 outlet complex with beautiful landscaping which has already become a very popular hub for sale of plants and flowers was originally scheduled to complete in three months with the involvement of civil sector contractors but the Commander of the Army at the request of Ministry of Defence and Urban Development deployed Army Engineers and troops to do the task as early as possible.
Saturday’s (15) opening ceremony headed by Messrs Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development and Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development had an unexpected visitor to the venue. It was none other than His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa who made a surprise visit to the new location while on his way to another official commitment.
As all eyes were glued towards the VIP visitor, President Rajapaksa mingled with the public and the vendors on the site and went on talking to them freely.
The opening ceremony was coloured by the presence of several Senior Ministers and Ministers, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetillake, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral D.W.A.S. Dissanayake, Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal H.D Abeywickrama and a host of other invitees.
