Army Troops Busy Re-Constructing Collapsed Swinging Bridge at Pigeons Island

Demonstrating technical skills and professional capabilities, troops of the Sri Lanka Engineers of the Army are currently engaged in the urgent repairs, related to the damaged swinging bridge (Ellena Palama) at the Pigeons Island, Matara where ‘Uposhithagaraya’ of the Sri Rohana Sangha Sabha is situated.

On the instructions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, the troops of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers immediately proceeded to the location and undertook the constructions of the temporary alternative bridge to link the Pigeons Island and Matara town. This bridge facilitates the movement of visitors to the temple in the Pigeons Island.

The construction works are still underway and Officers and Other Ranks of 12 Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers with the assistance of expert troops of the 14 Chemical Biological Radiology and Nuclear Response (CBRN) Regiment Sri Lanka Engineers, 16 Workshop Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, 4 (V) Engineer Regiment the Sri Lanka Engineers, 12 (V) Corps of Engineer Service, troops of the 613 Brigade and 3 (V) Gemunu Watch are contributing as the workforce to this mammoth project.

It is being supervised by the Chief Field Engineer, Major General Chandana Wijayasundara, together with the General Officer Commanding, Engineer Division, Major General Mahinda Jayawardena and the Commander General Engineer Brigade, Brigadier Asanga Perera.

All the arrangements have been made to complete the renovation of the temporary bridge in the near future.
