Army Trains Batticaloa Students for Future Leadership Roles

WITH the intention of moulding and motivating the eastern province based students to become future leaders in the country, 234 Brigade troops in Batticaloa under the 23 Division conducted a full day workshop on ‘Leadership’ for 161student prefects, chosen from 4 Educational Zones in the Batticaloa district.

Selected topics in the workshop such as Introduction of Junior Leadership, Promotion of collective team spirit and roles, Leadership as school students and Leadership characteristics and its practical roles enabled them to realize that the true image of a soldier is entirely different from what the former terrorist leaders had painted in their minds.

The one-day arrangement, organized by 234 Brigade Commander Brigadier L.M Mudalige with the blessings of the 23 Division Commander, Major General M.H.S.B Perera took place at Dharba Auditorium at Manmunai North Divisional Secretariat premises.

Participants, accompanied by 30 teachers of those respective schools were provided with free transport, breakfast, lunch, tea and refreshments during the workshop. The lady Divisional Secretary for Manmunai North and the 234 Brigade Commander at the end of the day’s session awarded certificates of participation to all the students, attending the seminar.

Some of those participants towards the end of the sessions have been quoted by a staffer in the ‘Sunday Observer’ in its 25th July 2010 issue.

Here are some excerpts;
“We did not get a chance to talk to soldiers earlier as we were in fear of them. The LTTE had blocked us from having contacts with the soldiers. We should thank the Army for breaking that barrier and making our lives peaceful.

This is an important workshop for us to learn leadership qualities”, T. Thayani, said in her speech to the audience.
