Army Tennis Players Shine in Finals during Tournament in Trincomalee

More than 50 players belonging to 8 Regiments of the Army vied in the finals of the Sri Lanka Army Inter Regiment Tennis Tournament that got underway at the 22 Division Headquarters Tennis Court in Trincomalee on Tuesday (30).

Organized by the Army Tennis Association, chaired by Major General Aruna Jayasekara, General Officer Commanding, 22 Division, the championship trophy in the finals was won by the players in the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME).

Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) competitors secured runners up slots respectively after both teams vied in close tussles.

This year’s tournament was competed by Tennis teams of Sri Lanka Artillery, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Gemunu Watch, Gajaba Regiment, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Sri Lanka Army Service Corps and Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers regiments.

Winners included Lieutenant Colonel P. Vithanage (Over 45 Men's, over 35 Men's double and Men’s Open Doubles), Lance Bombardier W.M.C.U Kumara (Over 35 Men’s Singles), Craftsman R.K.A Jayasanka (Men’s Open Singles), Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Over 50 Men’s Open Doubles and Over 45 Men’s Open Doubles) and Colonel T.M Abeyratne (Over 50 Men’s Singles).

Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers players who received the most first places in the finals emerged champions and claimed the trophy.

Major General Dampath Fernando, Deputy Chief of Staff at the invitation of the Army Tennis Association attended as the Chief Guest and gave away trophies and merit awards to all the winners in the tournament.

Sri Lanka Army Tennis players, making a significant contribution to this recreational sport has to-date produced a number of professional tennis players. They have recorded the highest achievement in the Defence Services Championship - 2016 after absence of 7 years. Similarly, Army Wheelchair Tennis players under the disabled Tennis category have achieved amazing victories in both local and international tournaments and their excellence was well proved in Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and South Korea during the years in 2016 and 2017 by securing Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

Tennis as a recreational sport in the Army under the leadership of Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Chairman, Army Tennis Association has assumed a very attractive position among All Ranks, compelling preparation of more and more Tennis courts at Regimental, Divisional, Security Force and Training School levels in the past few years. Sri Lanka Army team, now boasts more than 50 highly competent Tennis players, is poised to travel abroad for several more international tournaments.

Some of the international achievements of the Army squad are as follows; Lance Bombardier D.S.R Dharamsena won 2nd place (doubles) in Malaysia – 2016, 2nd place (doubles) in Thailand- 2016, 1st place SLI (doubles) – 2017, 1st place SSC (doubles) – 2017, 3rd place (doubles) in Belgium - 2017 and 3rd place (doubles) in Belgium - 2017. Meanwhile, Staff Sergeant K.M.S.P Perera won the 1st place (single) in India – (2016 championship).
