The 12th National Open Water Swimming Meet (5 km) organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sport Committee, held along the Balapitaya Coastal area on 22 January with 70 swimmers of 13 island-wide sports clubs gave the win to Army swimmers.
The Army swimmers since the year 2010 have been maintaining unbroken supremacy by winning the overall Championship in the famous and popular beach event at Balapitiya. The Championship trophy was received by Craftsman W.M.B.L Aberathne, Captain of the Army team for the year 2023 amid roars of applause.
Major General Nishantha Manage, Chairman of the Army Aquatic Sports Committee, keeping in touch with the contestants inspired them to achieve their goal after providing them with necessary administrative facilities and guidelines.
Lance Corporal B.D Shehan of 2 (v) Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) was awarded as the Best Swimmer of the event.
