The 53rd annual Kinross 6 Mile Open Water Sea Swimming championship in Wellawatte, organized by the Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club (KSLSC), affiliated to the Sri Lanka Amateur Swimming Union was held on Sunday (25) with over 150 participants.
The race flagged off at 7.50a.m from the beach, opposite the club house at Wellawatte and swimmers swam parallel to the coast before turning around from an anchored boat point, opposite the Mount Lavinia Hotel for the return leg that ended at the same starting point.
The overall championship in both men's and women's categories was won by the Sri Lanka Army team securing individual first place (equal places by two Army swimmers) and the third place after the year 2011. Further 18 Army swimmers were among the first 20 achievers.
Male and female Army swimmers representing the Army sports club participated in the tournament.
The KSLSC, a pioneering club that has been providing life-saving services on the beach at Wellawatte since 1941, has been instrumental in organizing this competitive sea swim for many years.
The Kinross six-mile sea swim is the longest such race in Sri Lanka as most of the other open sea races are two-mile, and extending more recently to 5 km, in which Army male swimmers secured the champion's trophy. This is the first highest performance of Army woman swimmers in this year.
The event was made a reality under the close supervision of Major General Piyal Wickramaratne, Chairman, Army Aquatics Sports Committee who is also the Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) and the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR).
Colonel Clifford De Zoysa, Vice Chairman, Army Aquatics Sports Committee and a large gathering of Army and civil sector swimmers were at the venue.
