25 more school children picked up from low-income group families from Alaveddy schools in the Jaffna peninsula received scholarships, sponsored by the troops serving 513 Brigade under the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna.
Accordingly, each student will continue to have Rs. 1000/= each month into respective bank accounts for a period of one year. The initial Rs.1000/=, deposited in a savings book was handed over to those children’s parents at the same occasion during a brief ceremony at the Mahajana Sabha Hall, Alaveddy last Thursday (23).
During the same ceremony, a stock of 5000 school exercise books, worth Rs. 90,000/= and dry ration packets to 100 most poverty-stricken families in Alaveddy were donated. The occasion was graced by Major General Janaka Walgama, General Officer Commanding 51 Division as Chief Guest.
Meanwhile, foundation stones were laid for construction of two new houses for two homeless families in Alaveddy area the same day considering their prime requirement. Each house on its completion costs the Army around Rs. 350,000/=, which is to be pocketed out by the Army and other supporting parties.
In another move, 50 soldiers of the 513 Brigade gave away their blood for the use of patients under treatment at the Jaffna Teaching hospital. The donation took place at the same venue after the main events were over.
Rev. Fr. Jude Sutharshan, Divisional Secretary for Thelippalai Mr. S. Muralitharan, Brigade Commanders and a large gathering of civilians were present on the occasion.
