Army Seva Vanitha Conducts Multiple Donations for War Heroes’ Benefits

The award of deeds to six landless physically-handicapped War Heroes, vesting of a new house in an injured War Hero, donation of sports accessories to Army Para sportsmen and several other donations took place at the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) Headquarters on Thursday (8), headed by Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU.

At first, on the instructions of the Chief of Defense Staff and Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva, a one-acre land, donated by Ms Beatrice Abeysiriwardena, a philanthropist in Uda Aparekka in the Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat in Matara District was divided and distributed among 6 most deserving War Heroes. Deeds to those lands were handed over to the recipients on the occasion by Mrs Sujeewa Nelson. The donor, Ms Beatrice Abeysiriwardena, a retired news reader at Ruhunu Sevaya of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation who was also a graduate teacher had one of his brothers in the Army some time ago who had passed away. The donation was made to invoke merits on her departed brother and parents.

The land was divided and distributed among 6 landless War Heroes who contributed effectively to the fight against LTTE terrorism.

Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU at the Army Headquarters gave away those land deeds to those War Heroes who were without any land of their own.

During the same occasion, a completely furnished Army-built new house at Deniyaya, Matara through the sponsorship, extended by Industrial Safety Equipment Pvt Ltd at a cost of Rs 1.2 m was vested in the Special Forces War Hero, Sergeant M.M Chaminda on the same occasion. The War Hero sustained injuries and lost two toes and a part of the leg during the fight against LTTE terrorists in 2008.

The keys to the new house were given to the beneficiary by Mrs Sujeewa Nelson in the company of Mrs Deepika Gunasekara, Chairperson, Industrial Safety Equipment Pvt Ltd, Mrs Priyanthi Ranasinghe, Deputy Chairperson, SF-SVU and Brigadier Nishshanka Eeriyagama, Centre Commandant, SF. The coordination of the project was done by troops of SF - Regiment.

In addition, Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU made a cash gift to the beneficiary as a gesture of her generosity.

In addition, a large stock of sports equipment and accessories, needed for athletes participating in Para Games was donated to the SF as an appreciative gesture of their sports talents. The sponsorship for this worthy cause was extended by Mrs Lakshi Kadawathaarachchi, Chairperson, Lakshi Beauty Saloon at Ratnapura. The stock, valued at Rs 4 lakhs was handed over to the ASVU President at first and then to Brigadier Nishshanka Eeriyagama, Centre Commandant, SF on the same occasion.

The group of donors, Ms Beatrice Abeysiriwardena, Mrs Deepika Gunasekara and Mrs Lakshi Kadawathaarachchi were awarded special appreciative mementoes bringing the day’s ceremony to end.
