Army Seva Vanitha & Commander’s Fund Jointly Provide Scholarships to Students of War Hero Families

The Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), presided by Mrs Sujeewa Nelson while further expanding its welfare roles towards students in families of fallen War Heroes, disabled War Heroes, serving Army personnel and civil employees, provided a large chunk of incentives, worth more than Rs 3.5 million to achievers in Grade 5 scholarship examination, GCE O/L and GCE A/L examinations during a ceremony, held this afternoon (26) at the Defence Services College (DSC) auditorium in Colombo 2.

Mrs Chithrani Gunaratne, President, Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit at the invitation of Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU graced the awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest, together with Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army as the Guest of Honour.

On their arrival, a daughter and a son of the DSC in the company of Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, ASVU offering sheaves of betel welcomed the day’s Chief Guest, Mrs Chithrani Gunaratne, together with Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army before she was conducted to the auditorium in a welcome procession, coloured by cultural troupe of the Army.

During the awarding ceremony, 106 scholarships for the best achievers in GCE A/L (2019) and O/L (2018) examinations and 56 students, selected at regimental level for the same purpose were accordingly awarded Rs 1500/= each and the scholarship would continue for a period of one year as an incentive to students for continuation of their higher studies.

In addition, 45 students who secured more than 179 marks in the Grade 5 scholarship examination received Rs 15,000/= each and 33 students who obtained nine ‘A's in the GCE O/L were awarded Rs 20,000/= each as incentives during the same ceremony. Likewise, 28 students qualified for admission to the universities obtaining the highest Z score grade were gifted Rs 25,000/= each as educational grants.

Award of those financial incentives to all those students was made possible, following funds, collected by ASVU-spearheaded community-oriented fund-raising projects and special allocations made through the Commander’s fund considering the significance of this mammoth project. The total value of the scholarships and grants exceeded Rs 3.5 million and personal contribution, made by Mrs Nelson herself offered two scholarships on the same occasion.

Likewise, Mrs Shrirani Jane and Mr Anandagoda, two philanthropists readily sponsored award of 3 scholarships, each valued at Rs 1500/= per month for a period of one year in appreciation of their parents’ noble sacrifices for the sake of the country.

Those scholarship recipients in addition to their financial grants received school bags, sets of books, caps, dictionaries and school accessories, provided jointly by the Union Place People’s Bank and Dr Ananda Kumarasiri as an extended support to the project.

The day’s Chief Guest, Mrs Gunaratne, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Mrs Sujeewa Nelson and a few more joined on stage to give away those stimulants to the beneficiaries.

Chairpersons of Regimental Seva Vanitha Units, ASVU senior ladies, Principal at DSC, teachers, civil employees, family members of those students, parents and a gathering of invitees attended the awarding ceremony.
