Army Ruggerites Carry Away 'A' Division Plate Championship Trophy

Championship (Plate) Trophy of the Inter Club Rugby Tournament ‘A’ Division was clinched by Army ruggerites Sunday (16) evening at Havelock Grounds beating their rival, the Police team to 21-19. The Army team secured victory with 02 tries, 01 conversion and 03 penalties, most of them in the second half of the match, witnessed by a large gathering of spectators including Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army.

The Police team giving a tough resistance to the winners collected their score with 01 try, 01 conversion and 04 penalties bringing the total score to 19.

The first half of the match, the Police team was in the lead with 16 – 9 but they could not hold on to the record in the face of stiff resistance of the fellow-Army ruggerites.

It was apparent that the determined Army team swept into action in the second half, showing an extra spirit of vigour and enthusiasm as the crowds were turning noisy and cheerful.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest awarded the final Championship (Plate) to the Army team at the request of Major General G.D.H.K Gunaratne, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Rugby Committee. Several officials including Chairman, Sri Lanka Rugby Association witnessed the tussle.

Both teams before the commencement of the match exchanged greetings in the company of referees and received best wishes of the Chief Guest.
