Army Rowers (Men & Women) Carry Away Championships in Both Tournaments

Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) in coordination with the Bolgoda Rowing Club, organized the Indoor Rowing Tournament for 3rd time at KDU during October 4 - 5.

Major General M.P. Peiris, Vice Chancellor, KDU and Chairman of Sri Lanka Rowing Club as the chief guest of the inauguration ceremony and Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Commander of the Navy as the chief guest at the closing ceremony attended the events.

The tournament was organized under seven age categories, one open event and one more challenge event. More than 250 players representing Tri-Forces, Universities, Sports Clubs and Schools participated in the tournament.    
               
Sri Lanka Army Rowing Club (Men’s Team) emerged Champions securing 12 Gold, 8 Silver and 5 Bronze medals. The runners-up were the teams from Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa and Colombo Asian International School.

In the women’s category, Sri Lanka Rowing Women’s Team emerged Women’s Championship collecting 8 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. The runner-up was St. Bishop Girls College, Colombo.

Lieutenant S.A. Vivekananda of Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) made a National Record (6 min 49 sec), breaking the previous record (6 min 56 sec).     

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) Inter Unit Athletic Tournament- 2013 was held with the participation of many athletes serving the SLAWC during August 22 - 23 and the SLAWC football team emerged the championship in the Inter Club Football Tournament on 4 October.

During the same month, the SLAWC won the Rugby Championship in the Defence Service Rugby Tournament - 2013.
